What happened

Southwest operates a point-to-point network rather than hub-and-spoke, so disruptions spread across the system. Its crew scheduling relied on old software and manual phone calls. Unions had warned for years that the system couldn't cope with major disruption.

When Winter Storm Elliott hit in December 2022, other airlines recovered within days. Southwest's systems couldn't track where crews were, and it cancelled about 16,700 flights between 21 and 31 December, stranding passengers over the holidays.

Southwest refunded and reimbursed customers, and the disruption cost it over $1 billion. In December 2023 the US Department of Transportation imposed a record $140 million penalty. Southwest accelerated investment in technology upgrades.
