What happened

Alakh Pandey started teaching physics on YouTube in 2016 for students preparing for competitive exams such as JEE and NEET. His energetic, relatable teaching built a large following, especially among students who couldn't afford expensive coaching.

In 2020 he launched the Physics Wallah app, offering full courses at very low prices — often a few thousand rupees — compared with lakhs at traditional coaching institutes. Free YouTube content acted as marketing, keeping acquisition costs low.

In June 2022 Physics Wallah raised $100 million, valuing it at about $1.1 billion. It later opened offline centres, combining online reach with in-person teaching.
