What happened
Marcos Galperin wrote the business plan for MercadoLibre at Stanford and launched it in Buenos Aires in 1999. eBay took a stake in 2001 and agreed to stay out of the region.
Latin American e-commerce faced big obstacles: many people lacked credit cards, buyers didn't trust sellers, and delivery was unreliable. MercadoLibre built Mercado Pago to hold payments safely and to serve people without cards, and Mercado Envios to manage shipping. Mercado Pago later became a major fintech, offering wallets and loans.
MercadoLibre listed on Nasdaq in 2007. In 2023 it reported revenue of about $14.5 billion, and it became one of the most valuable companies in Latin America.
