Platform strategy
what it means
Building a business that creates value primarily by connecting two or more distinct groups (buyers and sellers, riders and drivers) rather than by producing and selling a good in a straight line.
a real example
The largest accommodation and ride-hailing companies in the world own comparatively little of the physical inventory (rooms, vehicles) their entire business depends on — they own the connection, not the assets.
when to use it
Markets with fragmented, underused supply on one side and unmet, inconvenient demand on the other, where a trusted intermediary can genuinely improve the match.
when it backfires
Platforms fail without enough of both sides simultaneously — supply with no demand or demand with no supply is just an empty marketplace, and building both at once is genuinely hard.
