What happened
Sridhar Vembu, a former Qualcomm engineer, co-founded AdventNet in 1996 to make network management software. The company later launched Zoho, a suite of online business applications, and renamed itself Zoho Corporation in 2009.
Zoho refused venture capital, keeping control and focusing on long-term product building. It offered dozens of apps — CRM, accounting, email, HR — at prices well below US rivals. It set up offices in rural Tamil Nadu, including Tenkasi, and runs Zoho Schools of Learning to train young people without traditional degrees.
Zoho grew into a global software company used by millions of businesses, with revenue of about ₹8,700 crore and profit of about ₹2,800 crore in FY2023.
