What happened

Rovio, founded in 2003 by Helsinki students, made games for clients and for phones before smartphones took off. By 2009 it had released 51 titles and was close to running out of money.

Angry Birds, released for the iPhone in December 2009, was simple to play with one finger, had physics-based puzzles, and memorable characters. It became the top paid app in many countries and passed a billion downloads across its versions by 2012. Rovio expanded into toys, licensing, theme parks, and a 2016 animated film.

Rovio found it hard to produce a second hit and cut staff several times. Sega bought it in 2023 for about €706 million.

  • Characters strong enough to support merchandise.

the lesson

Many hits come after long runs of misses — but one hit is not a business model.

Apply it to your business

  1. 1Keep costs low enough to survive many attempts.
  2. 2Ride a new platform early.
  3. 3Plan how to diversify after a big hit.
