What happened
Tony Tan Caktiong opened an ice-cream parlour in Quezon City in 1975, then shifted to hamburgers in 1978 as customers asked for hot food. When McDonald's entered the Philippines in 1981, many expected Jollibee to lose.
Jollibee won by designing for Filipino tastes: a sweeter burger, sweet-style spaghetti with hot dog slices, and crispy ‘Chickenjoy’ fried chicken with rice. Its bee mascot appealed to families. It expanded quickly into provincial towns and kept prices accessible.
Jollibee became the Philippines' leading fast-food chain, ahead of McDonald's, and grew into a global group with brands including Mang Inasal, Red Ribbon, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, and Smashburger, operating thousands of stores worldwide.
