What happened
HDFC Bank was incorporated in 1994, among the first private banks licensed after India's 1990s reforms. Aditya Puri, its managing director for over 25 years, built it around technology, service, and risk control.
The bank gathered low-cost current and savings deposits, invested early in branches, ATMs, and online banking, and expanded carefully into retail loans and credit cards. It was known for conservative lending and low bad loans compared with many state-owned banks.
For much of its history HDFC Bank grew profits at around 20% a year. In July 2023 it merged with its parent HDFC Ltd, creating India's largest private bank and one of the world's most valuable banks.
