What happened
The Dubai government launched Emirates in 1985 with about $10 million in start-up capital and two leased aircraft. Its strategy was to use Dubai's position — within about eight hours' flight of much of the world's population — to connect passengers between continents through one hub.
Emirates invested heavily in wide-body planes and became the world's largest operator of the giant Airbus A380. It built a premium brand with high service standards and sports sponsorships. Dubai developed its airport and tourism alongside the airline, creating a mutually reinforcing ecosystem.
Emirates reported a record profit of about $4.7 billion for the year to March 2024.
