What happened

In 2004 Unilever's Dove commissioned research finding that only about 2% of women around the world described themselves as beautiful. With agency Ogilvy, it launched the ‘Campaign for Real Beauty’, using women of different ages, sizes, and skin tones in its ads.

Videos such as ‘Evolution’ (2006), showing how a model's image was digitally altered, and ‘Real Beauty Sketches’ (2013), in which a forensic artist drew women from their own and strangers' descriptions, spread widely online. ‘Real Beauty Sketches’ became one of the most-viewed online ads of its time.

Dove's sales grew substantially over the campaign's first decade. The campaign also drew criticism, since Unilever sold other brands with very different messages — a reminder that purpose must be consistent.

  1. 1Research what your customers feel, not just what they buy.
  2. 2Tell stories that reflect your real customers.
  3. 3Stay consistent with your message for years.
