What happened

Jason Citron had previously sold a gaming social network to Facebook. His next studio, Hammer & Chisel, released Fates Forever, a mobile strategy game, in 2014. It didn't attract enough players.

The team had been building a voice and text chat tool to help gamers coordinate — something existing tools did badly. They pivoted, launching Discord in 2015. It was free, worked in the browser, and had low-latency voice. Gaming communities adopted it, then study groups, creators, and hobbyists.

Discord reached more than 150 million monthly users by 2020. In 2021 it reportedly walked away from acquisition talks with Microsoft valued at around $12 billion, choosing to remain independent.
