Crocs: from fad and collapse to cultural icon
Crocs boomed, over-expanded, and lost money in 2008. Years later it cut its range, embraced its ‘ugly’ image, and used celebrity collaborations and charms to become a fashion staple.

What happened
Crocs launched in 2002 as a boating shoe made of a foam resin. It became a craze; its 2006 IPO was one of the year's hottest. The company expanded into many styles and categories, built factories, and stocked heavily. When demand cooled in 2008, it was left with excess inventory and lost about $185 million. Its share price collapsed from about $75 to around $1.
Crocs survived but drifted for years. From 2017, under CEO Andrew Rees, it closed many stores and its own factories, cut its range to focus on the classic clog, and invested in marketing. It leaned into the shoe's divisive look with collaborations — Balenciaga, Post Malone, Justin Bieber, and others — and promoted Jibbitz charms for personalisation.
Sales grew strongly. By 2023 Crocs Inc. revenue was about $4 billion, including the HEYDUDE brand it bought in 2022.

Apply it to your business
- 1Grow inventory cautiously during a craze.
- 2Focus on your iconic product.
- 3Collaborations can refresh a brand's image.
