Cemex: delivering concrete like a taxi service
Mexican cement maker Cemex used GPS-tracked trucks and dynamic dispatching to cut delivery windows dramatically, and created a savings scheme for low-income home builders — then over-borrowed for acquisitions.

What happened
Ready-mix concrete must be delivered quickly before it sets, but construction sites often changed orders at the last minute. Under CEO Lorenzo Zambrano from 1985, Cemex studied how ambulances and couriers dispatched vehicles.
In the 1990s Cemex fitted trucks with GPS and computers and dispatched them dynamically, like taxis, rather than on fixed schedules. Delivery windows shrank from hours to around 20 minutes, letting Cemex charge more and use fewer trucks. In 1998 it launched Patrimonio Hoy, helping low-income families save weekly and receive materials and design advice to build homes step by step.
Cemex expanded globally through acquisitions, including Rinker in Australia for about $15 billion in 2007. The 2008 financial crisis left it heavily indebted, forcing asset sales.
