What happened

JRD Tata founded Tata Air Lines in 1932, flying the first flight himself. It became Air India and was nationalised in 1953. For decades it was India's flagship carrier, but by the 2000s it was losing money heavily, with large debts and old aircraft.

After failed attempts to sell it, the government sold Air India to the Tata Group in October 2021 for ₹18,000 crore (part cash, part debt). Tata took control in January 2022 and launched a transformation plan, refurbishing planes and improving service.

In February 2023 Air India placed one of the largest aircraft orders in history — about 470 Airbus and Boeing jets. Tata also merged its airline Vistara into Air India in 2024.
