Absolut: a 25-year campaign built on a bottle
Absolut entered the US in 1979 with an unusual bottle and no heritage in a Russian-dominated category. A long-running print campaign built around the bottle made it a leading premium vodka.

What happened
Swedish state-owned Vin & Sprit launched Absolut in the US in 1979. Vodka was associated with Russia, and the clear, label-less bottle — inspired by old Swedish medicine bottles — was unconventional.
Agency TBWA created a print campaign from 1980 in which every ad featured the bottle with a two-word headline such as ‘Absolut Perfection’. Over about 25 years it ran around 1,500 ads, including collaborations with artists such as Andy Warhol. People collected the ads.
Absolut's US sales grew from a few thousand cases to millions of cases a year, and it became one of the world's best-known premium vodkas. Pernod Ricard bought Absolut in 2008 for about €5.6 billion.
