a real example
Japanese manufacturing systems built global reputations for quality and efficiency substantially through kaizen — frontline workers empowered to flag and fix small inefficiencies constantly, not through occasional big overhauls.
when to use it
Any repeatable operational process, especially where frontline workers see waste and friction management doesn't — kaizen works by trusting and structuring their input.
when it backfires
Kaizen imposed top-down as a slogan, without actually empowering frontline staff to change anything, produces posters on the wall and no real improvement.
