Category of one
what it means
Combining several ordinary capabilities in a way no competitor has bothered to combine, so the resulting offer can't be fairly compared to any single competitor at all.
a real example
Brands that fuse categories that weren't previously connected — fitness plus community plus content, for instance — end up being compared to no single existing competitor, which is the point.
when to use it
Businesses that genuinely span more than one traditional category and are being unfairly compared only against single-category specialists.
when it backfires
Claiming to be a 'category of one' when the offer is really just an ordinary competitor with extra marketing language convinces nobody and can look evasive about real weaknesses.
